Documents Required for Bhutan Visa, Indians Complete Checklist 2026
The Bhutan e-visa has one of the shortest document lists of any visa available to Indian travelers. You do not need a bank statement, salary slip, ITR, employer letter, cover letter, or sponsor declaration. The application asks for seven things and most take seconds. The one item that requires real preparation is the photo, Bhutan’s portal automatically rejects grey backgrounds, and Indian studios use grey by default.

Complete Document Checklist
-
Indian passport (6+ months validity) OR Voter ID card Most CriticalBoth Bhutan and Nepal accept Indian passport or Voter ID card as the travel document. This is rare globally — most international destinations require a passport. If using Voter ID, carry it in excellent condition — no damage, legible photo and name. Aadhaar card is NOT accepted for Nepal travel (except ages under 15 or over 65). For Bhutan, check with the immigration office whether Aadhaar is accepted — carry Voter ID or passport to be safe.
-
Passport-size photographs (for Bhutan Entry Permit) Most CriticalRequired for Bhutan Entry Permit application at the border or airport. Carry 2 to 4 recent passport photos with white background. Not required for Nepal — you just show ID at immigration.
-
SDF payment receipt (Bhutan) Most CriticalIf applying online at immi.gov.bt before travel, you will have a payment receipt for the SDF. Print this and carry it. If paying on arrival at Phuentsholing or Paro, you pay at the immigration counter and receive a receipt. This receipt confirms your SDF is settled and is checked at internal Bhutan checkposts.
-
Hotel booking or accommodation details (Bhutan)Required for Bhutan Entry Permit application — you need to provide the name and address of where you are staying. Book accommodation before applying online. For on-arrival at Phuentsholing, having hotel details ready speeds up the process.
-
Return transport ticket (recommended for both)Not strictly required for Nepal (visa-free, unlimited stay) but good to have. For Bhutan, having your return flight or transport details ready confirms your stay duration and matches your SDF payment. At Paro Airport, the immigration officer may check your return flight.
-
Children’s documents — school ID and birth certificateFor Nepal: children aged 15-18 need a School Identity Certificate from their school principal plus a photo ID. For Bhutan: children need their own passport or Voter ID. Birth certificate helps confirm age for SDF exemption (under 5 free, 6-12 at 50%). Children traveling without both parents need a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent.
Unlike Schengen or UK visa applications, Bhutan’s e-visa does not require any of the following:
- Visa for either Bhutan or Nepal — neither country requires a visa for Indians
- Visa fee — Entry Permit for Bhutan is free (SDF is a tourism fee, not a visa fee)
- Visa fee for Nepal — completely free entry
- Bank statements or ITR — not required for either country
- Salary slips or employment letter — not required
- Travel insurance — recommended but not required for entry to either country
- Hotel booking for Nepal — no documentation required for entry
- Invitation letter — not required
- Aadhaar card — NOT valid for Nepal (carry passport or Voter ID instead)
What the Portal Checks Automatically
| Item | What It Checks | Most Common Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo background | Pixel colour value of background | Grey from Indian studios, auto-rejected | Use remove.bg before uploading |
| Full name | Character-by-character match vs passport | Omitting middle name or using initials | Copy from passport bio-data page |
| Passport number | Format and character accuracy | O vs 0, I vs 1 confusion | Copy character by character |
| Passport expiry | 6+ months beyond entry date | Passport expiring within 6 months | Renew before applying |
| File sizes | Both files under 2MB | High-res scans exceeding limit | Compress at ilovepdf.com |
| File format | JPEG for photo, JPEG or PDF for passport | iPhone users uploading HEIC format | Convert to JPEG before uploading |
How to Prepare Each Document Correctly
Getting the photo right (most important step)
Go to remove.bg on your phone or computer. Upload your existing passport photo. The tool replaces the background with white in about 10 seconds. Download the JPEG result. Zoom in on the corners and hairline, check there are no grey patches. Save as JPEG under 2MB. This single step eliminates the most common cause of Indian rejections.
Scanning your passport correctly
Download Adobe Scan or Microsoft Lens (both free). These apps handle document scanning far better than your regular camera app, they auto-correct perspective and enhance contrast. Open your passport flat on a hard surface in good daylight. Scan in document mode, not photo mode. After scanning, zoom in on the MRZ zone at the very bottom of the bio-data page and verify each character is sharp and individually readable. Save as JPEG or PDF under 2MB.
Does your employment status change any of this?
No. The Bhutan e-visa form does not ask about your employment, income, or professional background at any point. The checklist above applies identically to salaried employees, freelancers, business owners, homemakers, students, retired persons, and NRIs. Every applicant submits the same documents.

Common Mistakes Bhutan Travelers Wish They Had Known
Booking non-refundable flights before getting visa approval. The e-visa takes Instant on arrival or online via immi.gov.bt but can extend during Vietnamese public holidays. Always wait for the approval email before booking flights you cannot cancel.
Using a travel agent for the e-visa. Agents in India charge Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 to fill a 15-minute form available at the official portal for Rs 0. The visa you receive is identical. Apply at https://immi.gov.bt directly.
Printing only one copy of the approval letter. You need it at two points: the check-in counter at the Indian airport, and Bhutan immigration on arrival. Print two copies and carry both.
Arriving at the airport with only a phone screen. Some immigration counters in Bhutan do not accept phone screens. Physical printed copies are always accepted. Print before you leave home.
Choosing the wrong entry type. Single entry (Rs 0) is right for a Vietnam-only trip. Multiple entry (check visa types table for Bhutan fee) is needed if you plan to exit to Cambodia or Laos and return. Confirm which you need before paying.
