Malaysia is visa-free for Indian passport holders until 31 December 2026. Thirty days, no visa fee, no prior application. You submit one mandatory digital form called the MDAC before flying, show up at KLIA with your documents, and immigration stamps you in. Straightforward in principle. In practice, Indians are being Refused Entry at Kuala Lumpur International Airport under this very scheme in higher numbers than almost any other nationality. The High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur issued a formal advisory on 31 August 2025 warning Indian travelers about Not to Land orders. The four reasons are documented and preventable: no return ticket, insufficient funds, no confirmed accommodation, and suspected work intent. Every Indian who has been stranded at KLIA and put back on the next flight home was turned away for one of these four reasons. This guide covers what the MDAC is, How to submit it in five minutes, what Malaysian immigration actually checks when they see an Indian passport, the NTL situation and How to avoid it completely, and the full cost of a Malaysia trip from India.

Documents Required for Malaysia Visa
-
โ
Indian passport — valid 6+ months from arrival, at least 1 blank page
Must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date in Malaysia. At least 1 blank page needed for the entry stamp. Passport must be in good physical condition — water damage, torn pages, or loose bio-data page lamination can cause flagging at KLIA immigration.
-
โ
MDAC confirmation PDF Most Critical
Submit at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main within 72 hours before arrival. Free, 5 minutes to complete. You receive a PDF confirmation. S
How to airline at check-in and to the immigration officer at KLIA. Many airlines now verify MDAC at the gate before boarding. Without it you risk being denied boarding or delayed at immigration.
-
โ
Return or onward flight ticket — confirmed Most Critical
The most common reason for NTL orders at KLIA per the High Commission of India advisory. Malaysian immigration requires proof you are leaving before your 30-day Social Visit Pass expires. A one-way ticket immediately flags potential overstay or work intent. Book and confirm your return before flying. Have it ready on your phone before joining the immigration queue. Show it proactively before the officer asks.
-
โ
Hotel booking confirmation for full stay Most Critical
Show accommodation for your complete trip. Booking.com or Agoda confirmation on your phone is accepted. Know your hotel name and area — you entered it in your MDAC and immigration may cross-reference. If staying with friends or family, have their Malaysian phone number and complete street address written down.
-
โ
Proof of funds — Rs 50,000+ accessible Most Critical
Malaysian immigration guidance recommends approximately USD 50 per day of stay (approx Rs 4,200 per day). For a 7-day trip that is Rs 30,000 minimum. Show your bank app with Rs 50,000+ balance or a credit card with an available limit above Rs 30,000. The High Commission of India advisory cites insufficient funds as a primary NTL cause. Have it accessible instantly — do not fumble.
What You Do NOT Need
Unlike Schengen or UK visa applications, Malaysia’s e-visa does not require:
- Visa application or e-visa — no visa needed for tourism until 31 Dec 2026
- Visa fee of any kind — entry is free
- MDAC processing fee — MDAC is completely free at the official portal
- Bank statement printout — bank app on phone is sufficient
- Salary slip or ITR
- Employment verification or NOC letter
- Travel insurance certificate — recommended but not checked
- Invitation letter from Malaysian citizen
- Cover letter or sponsor letter
Why Malaysia Visa Gets Rejected for Indians , Every Cause and Fix
1
No return ticket — arriving on one-way ticket , Most common NTL reason per High Commission of India advisory August 2025
Why it happens for Indians: Some travelers book one-way tickets planning to buy returns later, or agents sell one-way packages. Malaysian immigration treats one-way tickets as strong evidence of planned overstay or work intent. This is the fastest path to an NTL order at KLIA.
Fix: Book a confirmed return flight before flying to Malaysia. A refundable IndiGo or AirAsia return costs almost nothing extra over a one-way. Screenshot your return ticket and have it ready before joining the immigration queue. Show it proactively.
2
Insufficient funds , Second most common NTL cause
Why it happens for Indians: Travelers arrive with minimal cash or weak bank balances, assuming visa-free status means no financial scrutiny. Malaysian immigration routinely checks funds for Indian passport holders following the 2024 to 2025 NTL incidents.
Fix: Have your bank app open showing Rs 50,000+ before joining the queue. A credit card with a clear available limit above Rs 30,000 also works. Some cash in Ringgit (even RM 200 to RM 300) further demonstrates genuine tourist intent.
3
No confirmed accommodation , Third most common NTL cause
Why it happens for Indians: Budget travelers plan to find accommodation after arriving. Saying ‘I will look for a hotel’ at KLIA immigration is an immediate red flag. Officers may call the hotel to verify — if the booking is not confirmed, the NTL order follows.
Fix: Book your full stay before flying. Have Booking.com or Agoda confirmations on your phone. Know your hotel name and area. Be consistent with what you entered in your MDAC.
4
Suspected work intent , Growing cause — driven by illegal employment agent activity in India
Why it happens for Indians: Unscrupulous agents in India sell Malaysia job placements using the visa-free scheme as entry. Malaysian immigration has profiled this pattern and applies heightened scrutiny to single male travelers aged 22 to 35, large groups on the same flight from smaller Indian cities, and travelers with vague or inconsistent itinerary answers.
Fix: Be truthful and specific about your itinerary. Petronas Towers, Batu Caves, Langkawi, Penang, Genting — name what you actually plan to visit. Never mention work, employment, or business income during an immigration interaction.
5
MDAC not submitted , Common among first-time Malaysia travelers
Why it happens for Indians: MDAC was introduced December 2023. Many travelers using older guides or agent-booked packages are unaware. Airlines increasingly check MDAC at boarding — travelers without it may be denied boarding.
Fix: Submit MDAC at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main within 72 hours before arrival. Free, 5 minutes. Download the PDF confirmation. Never pay any website for MDAC — it is always free.
6
Visa-free policy expired — traveling after 31 December 2026 , Future risk — policy has a fixed expiry date
Why it happens for Indians: The visa-free scheme expires 31 December 2026. It has been extended twice before but is not permanent. Travelers who book trips in January 2027+ without checking current policy risk arriving without valid entry authority.
Fix: Check kln.gov.my (Malaysian High Commission New Delhi) or imi.gov.my (Malaysian Immigration) for current policy status before booking any Malaysia trip.

How to Apply for Malaysia Visa from India , Step by Step
1
Book a confirmed return ticket before anything else
Book your return flight before you start any other preparation. This is non-negotiable for Malaysia entry. A confirmed return ticket on IndiGo, AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, or Batik Air is what separates a smooth immigration experience from an NTL order. Do not fly to Malaysia on a one-way ticket.
2
Book your full accommodation before flying
Arrange hotel or accommodation for your complete stay before departing India. You need the hotel name and complete address for your MDAC. Budget hotels in KL start at Rs 1,500 per night on Booking.com. If staying with relatives or friends, get their full Malaysian address and phone number.
3
Submit MDAC within 72 hours of arrival — free, 5 minutes
Go to imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main. Click Register. Fill passport details exactly as in your passport. Enter your flight number, arrival date, and Malaysia accommodation address. Submit. Check your email for the PIN. Return to the site, click Check Registration, enter passport number and PIN, download the PDF. Never submit more than 72 hours before arrival. Never pay any third-party site — MDAC is always free.
4
Ensure you can demonstrate adequate funds instantly
Before leaving for the airport, confirm your bank app shows Rs 50,000+ or your credit card shows a clear available limit above Rs 30,000. Have this ready to show without fumbling. Malaysian immigration can and does ask Indian passport holders for financial capacity proof.
5
Know your itinerary before joining the immigration queue
Know 3 to 4 things you plan to see or do in Malaysia. Petronas Towers, Batu Caves, Langkawi, Penang, Genting Highlands. You do not need a minute-by-minute plan — just a coherent and consistent answer when asked why you are visiting.
6
At KLIA immigration — documents ready, answers clear
At KLIA Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, join the Visitor or All Passports queue. Have ready: passport open to bio-data page, MDAC PDF on phone, return ticket on phone, hotel booking on phone, bank app accessible. The officer will check your documents and stamp your passport for 30 days. If asked about your visit say tourism and name 2 to 3 destinations. If sent to secondary screening, stay calm — it is a check, not an NTL order. Answer consistently and show all documents.
7
Know your 30-day limit and the policy expiry
Your Social Visit Pass is stamped for 30 days from arrival. Cannot be extended inside Malaysia. Exit before it expires. Overstaying results in RM 10,000+ fines, possible detention, and future entry bans. The visa-free policy expires 31 December 2026 — check for renewal if traveling after that date.

Hidden Costs Most Indians Miss
KLIA to KL city transport both ways
KLIA Ekspres train is Rs 700 one-way, 28 minutes to KL Sentral. For a couple that is Rs 2,800 return. Grab from KLIA costs Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,800 and takes 45 to 75 minutes in traffic. Budget this separately from your hotel.
Langkawi access from KL
Getting to Langkawi from KL requires a flight (Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000 return) or a bus plus ferry combination (Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 but takes 5 to 7 hours). Budget separately for island access.
Genting Highlands day trip
Awana Skyway gondola: approximately Rs 700 return. Theme park entry adds Rs 400 to Rs 800. A full Genting day trip from KL runs Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 per person including transport.
Grab surge pricing in KL
During morning and evening peak, airport arrivals, or rain, surge multipliers can double base Grab fares. A standard KL Sentral to KLCC ride off-peak is Rs 180 to Rs 300. During surge it becomes Rs 450 to Rs 700.
Currency exchange losses
Do not exchange Ringgit at KLIA — rates are poor. Use a zero-forex card (Niyo Global or IDFC FIRST WOW) for all spending and withdraw cash from Malaysian ATMs. This saves Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 on a Rs 50,000 trip.
Roaming versus local SIM
Indian carrier roaming in Malaysia costs Rs 150 to Rs 300 per day with throttled data. A local Maxis or Celcom 7-day unlimited SIM at KLIA costs Rs 500 to Rs 900. Buy it at the airport before leaving the terminal.
Money-Saving Tips for Malaysia from India
1
AirAsia has the most India-KL routes — set a price alert
AirAsia operates direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, and Amritsar to KL. Book 6 to 8 weeks ahead for Rs 7,000 to Rs 12,000 one-way. Flash sales drop to Rs 4,500 to Rs 6,000. Set a Google Flights price alert.
2
Stay in Bukit Bintang or KL Sentral — not KLCC
Hotels near Petronas Towers charge 40 to 60% more than equivalent quality in Bukit Bintang (10 minutes by monorail) or KL Sentral. A 3-star Bukit Bintang hotel is Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,500 per night versus Rs 4,500 to Rs 6,000 near KLCC.
3
Eat at hawker centres and kopitiam
Nasi lemak or roti canai at a hawker stall: Rs 80 to Rs 150. Same food at a tourist restaurant near Petronas: Rs 400 to Rs 700. Jalan Alor night market has 50+ stalls from Rs 100 per dish. One hawker meal per day saves Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000 over 7 days.
4
Take KLIA Ekspres — skip Grab from the airport
KLIA Ekspres: Rs 700 one-way, 28 minutes, direct to KL Sentral. Grab from KLIA: Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,800, 45 to 75 minutes. For two people the train saves Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,200 on arrival plus the same on departure.
5
Use a zero-forex card for all Malaysia spending
Niyo Global and IDFC FIRST WOW charge no forex markup. Standard Indian cards add 1 to 3.5% per transaction. On a Rs 50,000 Malaysia trip that is Rs 500 to Rs 1,750 in avoidable fees.
6
Submit MDAC yourself — never pay an agent
MDAC is free at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main and takes 5 minutes. Agents charge Rs 500 to Rs 2,000. Scam websites charge Rs 599 to Rs 1,500. The form is simple — name, passport number, flight details, hotel address. Do it yourself.
7
Batu Caves is free — skip tour packages
Batu Caves entry is free. KTM train from KL Sentral to Batu Caves costs Rs 30 each way, 30-minute journey. Tour packages charge Rs 800 to Rs 1,500 per person for the same experience. Take the train yourself and save Rs 750 to Rs 1,450 per person.

March is the best month for Indian travelers — dry weather across all major Malaysia destinations, excellent access to Langkawi and Penang, no major Indian or Malaysian holiday price spikes, and the fewest tourists of the year. February is excellent weather but Chinese New Year causes price spikes and crowding in KL and Penang.
Indian summer school holidays (May-June) coincide with the west coast monsoon. KL is manageable with afternoon showers, but Langkawi and Penang beaches are at their worst during May-June. If you must travel in school holidays, focus on KL city, Genting Highlands, and shopping. Expect flights 20 to 30% more expensive than off-peak regardless of weather quality.
What Happens When You Land , Malaysia Immigration
KLIA Terminal 1 handles most international full-service carriers. KLIA2 handles budget airlines including AirAsia. Join the Visitor or All Passports queue. Hand over passport. The officer will check MDAC, look at entry history, and may ask about accommodation and return ticket. Show both proactively before being asked. For Indian passports, heightened scrutiny is standard following the NTL incidents in 2024 to 2025. Show all documents confidently and answer itinerary questions specifically. If sent to secondary screening, stay calm — it is a standard check. Most genuine tourists clear secondary in 15 to 30 minutes.

What Malaysia Is Actually Like for Indian Travelers
Malaysia rewards the traveler who goes beyond Kuala Lumpur’s towers and malls. The city is more interesting than its Instagram version suggests — old Chinatown, Little India, the Malay kampung neighborhoods, a food scene that genuinely rivals anywhere in Asia. Penang is one of the great food cities of the world. Langkawi is a duty-free island where prices are lower on the island than on the Malaysian mainland. The visa-free policy makes Malaysia one of the easiest international destinations for Indians right now. The MDAC is five minutes of form-filling. The return ticket and hotel booking are things any organized traveler would have anyway. The NTL problem is entirely about travelers who show up without planning. A genuinely interested tourist never does that.

Frequently Asked Questions , Malaysia Visa for Indians
Is Malaysia visa free for Indians in 2026?
Yes, until 31 December 2026. Indian passport holders can enter Malaysia without a visa for up to 30 days per visit for tourism, business meetings, social visits, and transit. The policy does not cover employment or study. It expires 31 December 2026 — check for renewal if traveling after that date. Even with visa-free entry, you must submit the MDAC (free digital form at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main) within 72 hours before arrival and carry a return ticket, hotel booking, and proof of funds.
What is the MDAC and how do I submit it?
MDAC is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card — a mandatory free digital form that replaced the paper arrival card from December 2023. Every foreign visitor must submit it within 72 hours before arrival. Go to imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main, click Register, fill in your passport details and accommodation address, submit, check email for a PIN, download the PDF confirmation. Completely free — any website charging for MDAC is a scam. Show the PDF to airline staff at check-in and to immigration on arrival.
Why are Indians being refused entry to Malaysia?
The High Commission of India issued a formal advisory on 31 August 2025 warning about Not to Land orders at KLIA. Four documented causes: no return ticket (most common), insufficient funds, no confirmed accommodation, and suspected work intent. Unscrupulous agents in India use the visa-free scheme to send people seeking employment. Malaysian immigration has responded with heightened scrutiny of Indian passport holders. Carry all four items — return ticket, hotel booking, Rs 50,000+ in your bank app, MDAC confirmation — and you will not face issues.
What documents do I need for Malaysia visa-free entry?
Passport valid 6+ months, MDAC confirmation (free, from imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main), confirmed return or onward flight ticket, hotel booking for full stay, and proof of funds (bank app showing Rs 50,000+ or credit card with Rs 30,000+ available). No visa application, no fee, no bank statement printout needed. Have all documents accessible on your phone before joining the immigration queue at KLIA.
How much does a Malaysia trip cost from India?
Visa: Rs 0. MDAC: free. Return flights (Delhi or Mumbai): Rs 14,000 to Rs 28,000. Hotel 7 nights mid-range: Rs 10,500 to Rs 21,000. Food and transport: Rs 8,000 to Rs 14,000. Activities: Rs 2,000 to Rs 8,000. Travel insurance: Rs 800 to Rs 1,500. Total for 7 days: approximately Rs 35,000 to Rs 70,000 per person depending on choices.
Can Indians work in Malaysia on visa-free entry?
No. The 30-day Social Visit Pass is strictly for tourism, business meetings, social visits, and transit. Working or earning income on a Social Visit Pass is illegal and is one of the primary reasons Indians receive NTL orders at KLIA. Legitimate Malaysia employment requires an Employment Pass applied through a Malaysian employer, which takes 6 to 8 weeks and requires a minimum salary of RM 5,000 per month (approximately Rs 85,000). Anyone offering Malaysia employment under the visa-free scheme is running a scam.
What is an NTL order and what happens if I get one?
NTL means Not to Land — an order from Malaysian immigration that prevents you from entering Malaysia. You are held in the KLIA airport transit zone and cannot leave the terminal. You wait until your airline arranges your return flight to India — this can take hours or days. You pay for the return ticket yourself. Future Malaysia entry may be restricted. The four causes are all preventable: confirm return ticket, show adequate funds, carry hotel booking, travel genuinely for tourism.
What happens to Malaysia visa-free after 31 December 2026?
The current exemption expires 31 December 2026. It has been extended twice before but is not permanent policy. Whether it will be extended again or allowed to expire is unknown. If it expires, Indians will need a Malaysia eVisa (approximately Rs 2,100). Always check the official status at kln.gov.my or imi.gov.my before booking travel to Malaysia for 2027 and beyond.
Is Malaysia safe for Indian tourists?
Yes. Malaysia is one of the safest Southeast Asian destinations for Indian tourists. Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Langkawi are well-developed with good infrastructure. Common minor issues: tourist pricing near KLCC (use Grab instead of tourist taxis), phone snatching in crowded areas (standard urban precaution), traffic on main roads (Grab is more practical than walking). Violent crime against tourists is rare. Malaysia has a large resident Indian community which makes it particularly comfortable.
Can I extend my Malaysia stay beyond 30 days?
The Social Visit Pass cannot be extended inside Malaysia. You must exit before it expires. Overstaying results in fines of RM 10,000 or more, possible detention, and future entry bans. If you need more than 30 days, exit Malaysia and re-enter for a fresh 30-day stamp — but doing this repeatedly triggers suspicion of residency intent. For legitimate longer stays, apply for a Malaysia eVisa or the appropriate long-stay visa from India before departure.
